sure these are exagerated images, but they are real - gives the movie a hard edge that most people miss. Those in the know, can name the individuals the various characters are based on. Most people think this is a fantastic piece of fluff (which it is.) Watching this in a New Jersey movie theatre, it was really obvious that we were the only two laughing at various points - and that where we were sitting silent at what we considered serious moments of pathos, the rest of the theatre was laughing uproariously.Īt the time I saw this I was involved in the Australian Ballroom scene - albeit peripherally, my brother was a serious A grade competitor though, so we got to know many of the movers and shakers in ballroom. I saw this one while working in NY and living in New Jersey. Hillarious movie but under the Drag Queen veneer lies a serious theme. what they have in common is biting wit, sarcasm (which not all cultures "get"), and an underlying core story that is in fact serious.ĭistinctly Aussie humour - the english, kiwis and south africans get it - North Americans. Some of my favourite distinctively Aussie movies. I hope they were all left alive to spend it. Drunk or not, those stunt men really earned their money. The director, George Miller, must have had to get his stunt men drunk to perform some of the amazing feats of cinematic action featured in this film. I never tire of viewing it time and time again. Colorful characters, eye-catching scenery, gripping and suspenseful story. What are your favorites, and why? I can think of many examples, but I will begin with just one:Ī superbly made film from 1981, lean and mean without an ounce of fat or dead weight, single-minded and narrowly focused, an adventure story set in a "post-apocalyptic" wasteland (now a cliche, but fairly original in its setting when the film was released). I would like to hear from other fans of films from and about Australia. There have been many others over the years, and in my opinion, most of the best were from the 1970's and 1980's, the golden age, I would say, of Australian cinema. I believe the earliest one I saw was "Walkabout" and the most recent was "Rabbit-Proof Fence". I was also reminded that some of the best, most interesting films I have seen have come from Australia. I have never been there, but I have often thought of visiting.Īs I thought about Australia, it struck me that many of my impressions about it have been formed by what I have seen in films made in and about this country that is also a continent. Another thread concerning salt-water crocodiles started me thinking about Australia, a land which seems to me to be a place of both lush and stark beauty, with a unique history and culture as well as animal life seen nowhere else in the world.
